Legendary Flower

Amitav  Ghosh says that Calcutta was essentially an opium city and its entire financial world of the 18th and 19th century evolved around the opium trade . He tried retrieving the lives of the Indian merchants who lived there in Guangzhou ( formerly Canton ).

He also remarks in an interview that Victoria Memorial in Calcutta should have been Opium Memorial for obvious reason.

" River Of Smoke "  ( VIKING / PENGUIN INDIA )  weaves an intriguing tale of 19th century China and the thriving opium trade .
